BRAIN informed decisions bookmark cards for limited commercial use by birth workers as printed handouts.

These small cards would be great for giving as a handout to clients so they can keep a reminder handy of BRAIN, a framework to help make informed decisions in pregnancy, birth and parenting.

The sad reality is that our culture deems it necessary to medicalise and interfere in normal physiological processes, without consideration for holistic longer term impact and trauma for mother and child - and our world as a whole.

So it's our responsibility to educate ourselves, to be pushy, to be 'a bother', to do whatever it takes to feel confident in making informed decisions even if others disagree or don't understand.

Using the framework of BRAIN really helped me to feel comfortable with asking these tough questions without so much fear of 'being a bother'. I would say 'we are using BRAIN to help us make decisions' and then I'd know they'd understand I was clued up and was going to want all the info to make an informed choice!

We don't have to memorise every statistic and know every piece of evidence in order to be prepared for birth - as long as we know that we can ask questions, and we do have choices, and ultimately it is our decision. Hopefully if we employ BRAIN during birth then we won't feel like a cascade of interventions happened outside of our choice and control.

Because even if things don't go to plan you can know that you still made informed decisions about your care.

BRAIN

• Benefits - What are the aims and positive outcomes from the procedure or medication? What are the indications that this procedure is required and how will the procedure address the concern?
• Risks - What could go wrong? What might the side effects be? How might it impact other events? What are my individual risks based on my individual circumstances (not a generalised risk)? What happens if it doesn't work?
• Alternatives - Are there other options that could be tried first? Why is this procedure or medication being offered over other options?
• Instinct - What does my gut tell me? Do I believe this is the right thing to do or even necessary at all?
• Nothing - What would happen if we did nothing, or waited longer? What if we wait and see what happens? How urgent is it that something is done right now?

The limited use commercial license that comes with this download means that birth workers, doulas, hypnobirthing teachers, prenatal yoga teachers, antenatal educators and midwives can print to share and use with pregnant women, birth partners and clients. By buying this download you are agreeing to the following terms:

The license means you - as an individual - can:

• Print the downloads on paper or card at the size specified
• Give the printouts as handouts to your clients, or use as teaching tools or posters for your business
• You may use use a professional print service or print at home
• Add the images to a Powerpoint presentation to use with clients in person or remotely, as long as the presentation file itself isn't shared digitally
• Share the content using photos or videos of your printed materials on social media

The license DOES NOT allow you to:

• Print the images for any other reason than above or on any other material e.g. on a notebook or mug to give away
• Use the images as part of a product you will sell
• Share the digital files with anyone by email or another method
• Add the digital files to your website or use on social media
• Edit the images or remove my brand name
• Share with other professionals in your organisation
