Mama Cacao: How ceremonial cacao helps me as a mother
Since going from one child to two, I've felt almost-perpetually overwhelmed. Meeting the needs of two littles ones, plus trying to care for myself and my home, has seemed like an impossible task. Since discovering ceremonial cacao - in Mama Cacao’s heart-opening medicine I have found a beautiful ally in my mothering journey.
Discovering my spiritual toolkit
Since working with a spiritual mentor during my second pregnancy, and learning how to support my holistic health - mind, body and spirit - I have been joyfully uncovering the spiritual, divinely-and-earthly-connected woman I’ve always been inside.
Since childhood i felt very drawn to ‘hippy’ things, magic and witchcraft, but without any wise women or spiritual people in my life, I was never given the ‘vocabulary’ with which to describe (or trust) my experience and my intuition - or to learn the tools to practice a more spiritual and connected life. As a very sensitive child, who felt so much and didn’t get the guidance and support I needed, I have struggled with depression, anxiety, chronic people-pleasing and serious self-destructive behaviours all my life.
So, finally discovering ways I can feel connected to the Universe and supported by divine energy - such as crystal healing, divination, and reiki energy healing - and ways to feel connected to Mother Earth such as herbalism, grounding, and plant medicine - have truly changed my life.
My inner child feels gloriously-happy that she now knows ‘how’ to be the person she’s always been. When I meet her in meditations, I have given her rainbow tie dye hippy clothes, her own set of oracle cards, crystals and magical herbs, and told her about how to use them to feel safe and connected. I’m being the grown up to her now that I wish I’d had when I was little.
I felt called to ceremonial cacao for a while, but was unsure how to start, where to buy it, and how to ‘do it right’. But I happened to run into a lady at a local wellbeing fair who runs cacao ceremonies, and it felt divinely-guided.
I bought a block of cacao and set an intention to welcome in the motherly, loving energy of Mama Cacao into my days with my girlsn - but I wasn’t expecting it to be so profound.
Cacao helps me slow down and open my heart
Since I started a daily cacao practice of mindfully-preparing and drinking a mug of ceremonial cacao, her magic and medicine has helped me be a more present mother, to slow down, and to be more compassionate with myself. It is said that the spirit of cacao will give you what you need - not neccearily what you want - which I feel drawn to as another way to build trust in my journey.
I began preparing my cup of cacao first thing in the morning, as I wanted to enjoy it as part of setting intentions for the day with my daughters. What I love about intention-setting is that I don’t beat myself up if I don’t manage it.
I feel as children we were made to think it was safer to expect the worst, and not to try in case we fail. But I have taught myself that’s not true - and I know now it’s always safe to hope.
My intention is usually the same: to be present and playful - both with myself and my children. I ask for Mama Cacao’s medicine to help ground my energy, to help me slow down and be in the moment with them, to be in my body, to feel my breath.
And when I feel like that - I'm much more likely to just get down on the floor with my girls and play. Not phoning it in while my mind races and I think of all the jobs that need doing - but actually opening my heart, and letting my inner child feel playful too.
I know that if I can allow myself to be in the present moment, then that will be the single biggest thing I can do to feel better about myself as a mother, and how I relate to and provide for my children.
As I hold the cacao in my favourite mug, I take deep breaths in, sending my energy down into the Earth - feeling her energy rising back up to hold me. As I breathe in, I close my eyes and I feel my heart glowing pink and full of love and trust. I don’t often have time or freedom to have a ‘proper’ cacao meditation, but even for a few minutes drinking my cacao I am nourishing myself and filling my cup.
It can be so hard to establish and maintain ‘self-care’ rituals when we’re needed all the time by our children, and I still haven’t managed to have a consistent oracle cards, yoga and morning journaling practice - but in cacao i have found an ally that I can count on - and never feels like too much to fit in.
After I have drank my cacao I feel more able to focus on one thing at a time, I feel more present and embodied, and more full up of love for myself so I have more love to give to my children.
“Many people hear a calling to connect with the Cacao Spirit. This calling is described as curiosity, a longing for more connection, a whisper in the heart or a strong voice to reconnect with Mother Nature. Cacao is more than chocolate, it is a spiritual dimension, an intelligence that we cannot perceive with the mind, but with the heart, the intuition and through feelings. - CacaoMama.com”
How I make my cacao
I decided to squeeze in some extra regular plant magic (and nutrition) into my life by adding boosters to my daily ceremonial cacao - but this is just my personal blend and no extras are required!
I have found my nails have stopped breaking and are much stronger since I have been having cacao and these extras, which I am taking as a beautiful sign that I am beginning to fill myself up after feeling depleted from pregnancy and birth.
Here’s how i make my ‘hug in a mug’:
Set an intention to slow down and be present while I prepare my cacao
- Heat up plant milk (it’s thought dairy can interfere with some of the healing properties). I think hazlenut works best.
- Add 25g (ish) of ground ceremonial grade cacao, plus a spoon of ashwagandha, maca, collagen and chicory root powders.
- Add natural sweetener to taste - my favourite is maple syrup.
- Blend with an electric handblender until smooth and a bit frothy.
- Pour with intention into my favourite mug.
- Find a comfy spot to sit (hopefully without toddlers climbing on me!) and take a few moments for me. Close my eyes, breathe in love and gentleness for myself and support from Mother Earth.
The difference of ceremonial cacao
Cacao was once considered sacred and used in ritual and ceremony, but over time, it has been diluted into chocolate with added fats and sugars, which don’t retain the magical properties.
Just like matcha tea, cacao has its own ‘ceremonial’ grade that comes from an heirloom bean which is sourced directly from a single place or a small part of a country - and harvested by Indigenous Communities from their own ancient 'gardens,' where it grows wild and has done so for centuries. The cacao is allowed to grow naturally in balance with other rainforest plants, sharing a symbiotic relationship between the plants and people.
The cacao beans are minimally-processed to produce pure cacao so all the original fats and goodness are retained. Ceremonial cacao is prepared as a solid block of ‘paste’ or can come pre-crumbled. The process of making cacao into cocoa powder removes all the original fats and alters the overall vibration and essence, resulting in a powder that (while still tastes nice and is nutritious), lacks the magic of ceremonial grade cacao.
By drinking cacao in its purest form, we can establish a deeper connection with ourselves, our children, and our Earth.

How cacao can help mothers
"Being a mum can be hectic, stressful and overwhelming, but I have found from mothers who attend my Cacao Ceremonies that Cacao is the perfect antidote.
I often describe drinking a cup of Cacao as like getting a hug from the inside! Amongst the many things Cacao can do, it releases some wonderful hormones into your body that just make you feel great, such as serotonin, dopamine, anandamide (the ‘bliss molecule’) and PEA (the ‘love chemical’), all of which just help you feel uplifted and energised.
Cacao also increases blood flow to the body and in particular the brain so is great for helping with focus and getting rid of brain-fog.
Cacao is also a superfood so can help you top up on vital nutrients you can be missing when life gets a bit hectic.
I often get mums coming along to my Cacao Ceremonies for these benefits, but it’s also a great opportunity to get some ‘me-time’, relax and reconnect with yourself.
There are many, many more benefits, too many to list here, but by consuming Cacao on a daily basis you will feel healthier, more at peace and present in day-to-day life."
